Gor Mahia striker Jacques Tuyisenge has described the goal he scored against Everton as the “best ever” of his expansive career.

The Rwandan international, who cost K’Ogalo Sh4 million last year, escaped the attention of English centre-backs Ashley Williams and Phil Jagielka, to head home Kenneth Muguna’s corner past a stranded Maarten Stekelenburg in Dar es Salaam on Thursday evening.

Even though the English side went on to win the game 2-1 with England captain Wayne Rooney scoring the goal of the match, Tuyisenge adds his team’s performances provided the best possible advert for Kenyan football.

Said Tuyisenge: “I started from the centre of the box and then made the run towards the far post because I knew what Muguna would do, thankfully the move happened as we planned and it turned out to be the best ever goal I have scored considering the calibre of our opponents.”

Speaking after the match, Everton’s Dutch coach Ronald Koeman described Gor Mahia as a “tough team” in a raft of compliments.

“It was a good game but a difficult one, Gor Mahia made it tough for us. They can be proud of their performance and I want to give them a lot of compliments for making it so tough for us,” said Koeman.

Gor chairman Ambrose Rachier and Kenya Premier League CEO Jack Oguda also heaped praises on Gor’s performance.

Said Rachier: “This was an important assignment and I am proud because we got to market our great club and players. The taste of playing with (Wayne) Rooney has given them a lot of confidence and my hope is this will catapult us to start dominating in continental assignments.”

Oguda added: “Gor Mahia did a very good job of marketing the SportPesa Premier League. Of course, the quality of that pitch in Dar helped our players to employ an impressive passing game which is a message to our authorities because our stadiums are of very low standards.”

This contest was arranged by giant gaming firm SportPesa which sponsors both teams to a combined tune of Sh700 million a year.
