Football Kenya Federation on Thursday appointed German Andreas Spier as the new Technical Director on a two-year contract.

At the same time, the federation has entered into partnership with SportPesa that will see the online betting firm sponsor grassroots football.

As part of the agreement, SportPesa will take care of the Spier’s salaries and allowances totaling Sh70 million annually as spelled out in his contract which takes effect on Friday.

Speaking yesterday during the unveiling ceremony, Spiers said that he has a long-term model that will see Kenya become a footballing giant again, and that he will not impose any foreign philosophy on the players.

“I ask for patience because nothing can be done on the short term. I have a number of targets but this will take time. My immediate task is to conduct recruitment for the Under 13 and Under 15 teams and conduct sub-branch championships for both the men and women,” said the German.

“I intend to evaluate the system so that we can find a suitable and agreeable style of play that the players can identify with. I will not impose any philosophy, even though I prefer the German style of play.”

Spiers replaces former Harambee Stars coach Jacob “Ghost” Mulee who left the position in August 2014.

The German tactician has previously worked in Rwanda as coach of Armée Patriotique Rwandaise Football Club (APR) as well as coach of the Rwandan national women’s football team.

FKF president Nick Mwendwa expressed confidence in the new director, saying that their dream of attaining football greatness is now very much on course.

“This is the first time we are having someone who has experience coaching a European side and I know that his inclusion will prove worthy in the near future,” said Mwendwa.

“This appointment is in line with Fifa’s requirement that every national team must have a technical director who is responsible for identifying and nurturing talent in the grassroots,” he said.
