What you need to know:

  • The position, which has in the past been occupied by Patrick Naggi, has been vacant since Jacob ‘Ghost’ Mulee left the post in August 2014.
  • Betway, who are SportPesa’s market competitors, had also been interested but are said to have been elbowed out by the latter, who have reportedly offered more cash.

Football Kenya Federation will on Thursday unveil German coach Andreas Spier as its Technical Director, Daily Nation Sport can reveal.

The position, which has in the past been occupied by Patrick Naggi, has been vacant since Jacob ‘Ghost’ Mulee left the post in August 2014.

The event to be held at city hotel will also see FKF and online betting firm SportPesa announce their partnership.

Though the federation remained tight-lipped on the matter, Daily Nation Sport has gathered that SportPesa have entered into a deal with the federation to be the official sponsors of the second tier league – National Super League.

FKF boss Nick Mwendwa could not comment on the matter but our source at Kandanda House said: “Everything has been set and tomorrow we will unveil the sponsorship. The president will also unveil the Technical Director, who hails from one of Europe’s football powerhouses.”

Spier has a good understanding of East African football. The German has worked in Rwanda where he handled Armée Patriotique Rwandaise Football Club (APR).

Spier began his stint in Rwanda in 2008 with APR junior side, and in the following year was picked to coach the Rwandan women’s national team before making his way to APR’s senior team.

The outspoken German is remembered for his touchline brawl with match officials on February 4, 2014 in a Rwandan League match which saw him banished to the terraces and banned for five league games.

In his new found role, Spier is expected to scout for talent and also come with training programmes to help develop the junior sides.
