Football Kenya Federation on Tuesday suspended national women football team’s goalkeeping coach Lawrence Webo.

FKF said the move, which comes in the wake of a sex scandal that has rocked the team, was to allow for investigations to take place.

In a statement, FKF said that they had asked Webo to step aside for having been “adversely mentioned in the scandal”.

“Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has asked Lawrence Webo to step aside as the national women football team goalkeeping coach,” said the statement.

“The move has been necessitated by the coach being adversely mentioned in connection with an alleged sexual scandal between him and a member of the playing unit.

“In light of the allegations, FKF has moved with speed to set up transparent internal mechanisms to not only investigate the claims but also come up with recommendations to ensure that the same, whether real or imagined does not occur in the future.”

The federation however added that Webo remains a member of the technical bench and may resume duties once he is cleared of the allegations.

There have been claims that some of the key players in the team had been asked to give sexual favours to earn slots in the team.

The sex claims come at a time that the David Ouma-coached Harambee Starlets are in camp preparing for whirlwind tour of Spain and Germany, where they have been invited for a host of build-up matches.

The team is expected to jet out on July 29 for Spain where they will pitch camp for seven days before flying to Germany to play three more friendly matches against Women Bundesliga League sides.

The friendly matches are part of the team’s build-up programme ahead of the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations that will be held in Cameroon from November 19 to December 3.

Meanwhile, the national under-17 side was set to leave the country for Mauritius yesterday afternoon to participate in the Cosafa invitational tournament.
