Faza stun Serani in Coast games

Lamu’s Faza Secondary School caused a major upset in the Coast secondary schools Term Two ‘B’ games when they edged out favourites Serani Secondary 2-1 in extra time in boys’ football quarter-finals at Shanzu Teachers Training College on Friday.

Serani took the lead in the 39th minute through Abdulmalik Yusuf to go into half-time 1-0 ahead. Upon resumption, Faza fought gallantly to equalise in the 87th minute when Nassir Khalfan intercepted a back pass to easily tap home.

Faza continued piling pressure as the game went into extra time and scored the winning goal with eight minutes to the final whistle when Ashraf Athman sent a powerful shot into the far corner of the net.

Defending champions Tononoka Secondary, missing some of their best players who are playing for teams in the Nationwide Division One League clubs, maintained their winning ways when they beat Likoni Secondary 3-0 at Shimo la Tewa School ground to qualify for the last four.

Key players missing

In the absence of their first team players, among them Mwinyi “Good Boy” Ali, Mohamed Mzee, Ali Boki, Ali gari and Ali Ali, Tononoka were in total command of the proceedings to emerge victors.

Tononoka took the lead in the seventh minute through Ahmed Mahfudh before Ronald Juma added the second. Ahmed Swaleh scored the third goal for Tononoka in the 89th minute.

In another quarter-final clash at the same venue, Redeemed Academy from Ukunda sent Malindi’s Muyeye packing when they beat them 2-1.

Mwavumbo of Kinango booked a place in the semi-finals when they defeated Tana Delta’s Marifano 2-0 at Shimo Annex ground.

Tononoka has been drawn against Redeemed, while Faza are set to play against Mwavumbo in semi-finals.

In the girls’ category, St John’s Girls of Kaloleni, playing under experienced coach Joseph Oyoo sounded a stern warning to defending champions Kilifi Mixed as they tore apart Taita’s Bura Girls 5-0 in a one-sided quarter-final match at Shanzu ground.

St John’s dominated the game and Rehema Mwacharo emerged the star of the match as she scored a hat-trick with other goals coming from Zenab Hamisi and Rehema Charles.

However, Kilifi Mixed also sailed to the semis after recording an easy 6-0 victory over Waa Girls of Kwale 6-0 while Likoni beat Mazeras Memorial 2-1.
