Elections: FKF releases list of clubs eligible to vote

What you need to know:

  • As part of its election guidelines, only clubs that have participated in the FKF run leagues in the last three years are eligible to take part in the national elections.

Football Kenya Federation on Wednesday released an initial list of 1,712 clubs drawn from 13 of its 20 branches eligible to vote in the forthcoming football elections.
The federation also said that a further list from the remaining seven branches were due to be released on Wednesday.

However, shockingly, of the clubs published, a good number of them lack match reports for the 2014 season. This is especially the case with clubs drawn from the south and north regions of North Eastern branches.

From the list, South Coast branch had the lions’ share of 230 clubs while North Eastern North branch had the least at 20.

“Any disputes arising from the composition of the preliminary list will be addressed following a written petition by the aggrieved party within three days of the publication of the list,” FKF said in a statement published on its website.

As part of its election guidelines, only clubs that have participated in the FKF run leagues in the last three years are eligible to take part in the national elections.

FKF Premier League chairman Nick Mwendwa and former Youth Fund boss Gor Semelang’o, who are both gunning to unseat Sam Nyamweya, have raised issues of the credibility of the club vetting process maintaining that the electoral board chaired by lawyer Donald Kipkoprir should vet the clubs.

The federation has however maintained that they are the only body with good knowledge of these clubs, thus well put to vet them.

Adan Ahmed, who was a member of the board that conducted the last national football elections in 2011, in which Nyamweya emerged triumphant will head the Appeals Board.

Some 78 delegates drawn from FKF’s 20 branches, 16 Kenyan Premier League clubs and 18 FKF-PL clubs will take part in the exercise.

Eight clubs from the National Super League and Division One will also be entitled to one vote each. The Kenya Football Referees Association, Coaches and Players Associations will also produce one delegate each.
