Defending champions Gekomoni Secondary from Nyanza and St Anthony’s from Rift Valley easily won their opening Group A matches as the Airtel Rising Stars national secondary schools Term Two ‘B’ games got under way at Shanzu Teachers College and Shimo la Tewa Secondary School grounds.
In volleyball, defending champions Cheptil Boys and Malava Girls got off to a winning start, beating Nguutani and Cheptil Girls 3-0 and 3-1 respectively.
Gekomoni beat Garissa High from North Eastern 2-0 while former champions St Anthony’s humbled Tononoka Secondary 2-0 to stay on course.
Against Garissa High, Gekomoni long to settle as their opponents troubled them with long shots which, however, went begging. George Nyamweya opened the scoring for Gekomoni in the 18th minute when he connected with a cross from Eric Onus to shoot home. He added the second in the 78th minute when he weaved through Garissa defence to score.
St Anthony’s dominate
On the other hand, St Anthony’s dominated hosts Tononoka from the start as Godia Mukolwe silenced the home crowed with a screamer in the 32nd minute. Meshark Karani added the second goal for St Anthony’s in the 45th minute from a goalmouth melee as Tononoka struggled before home crowd.
St Anthony’s could have scored the third on the stroke of time when a defender from Tononoka handled in the box, but Gabriel Anoika’s shot was saved by Tononoka goalkeeper Matano Bindo.
In the girls’ category, St John’s Girls Kaloleni shocked Western representatives Ibinzo 1-0 to top group A at Shanzu Teachers College. Rehema Mwacharo netted the lone goal in the 15th minute from a goalmouth melee. It was sweet victory for coach Joseph Oyoo who has now set his sights on winning the national trophy.
