With just one round of fixtures left, Gor Mahia have one hand on the title.

The 12-time champions stormed back to the top of the Tusker Premier League with a 4-0 thrashing of Muhoroni Youth at the City Stadium on Sunday, while champions Tusker beat Western Stima 2-0 at Kasarani.

Dan Sserunkuma scored a hat-rick as K’Ogalo responded to AFC Leopards’ 4-2 victory over Mathare United on Saturday by producing their biggest win of the season.

It was Gor’s eighth win on the bounce and another victory against Thika United next Saturday will see the green army win their first title since 1995.

Sserunkuma gave Gor the perfect start with a goal inside the opening 45 seconds.

The Ugandan latched onto a low cross from the right from Ali Abondo and gave it a deft touch to lift it above Muhoroni goalkeeper Joseck Gituma for the opener.

Muhoroni Youth, with nothing much to play for, made forays forward with great composure but the final touch badly let them down as Gor defenders kept them at bay.

Poor clearance

After 25 minutes, Muhoroni Youth were caught on the wrong foot after Serunkuma picked a poor clearance and lobbed Gathongo from 25 yards with a screamer.

Gor returned in the second-half stronger and needed just four minutes to add a third to their day’s tally; Christopher Wekesa stayed forward to head home a Moses Odhiambo cross after a corner, beating an exposed Gituma from close range.

With the lead intact, Gor seemed content to pass the ball around as they awaited the final whistle, but were almost made to pay dearly when Collins Neto stole in on 68 minutes with a header that hit the post and sailed clear.

With six minutes to go, Gor surged forward again with Sserunkuma the key architect and after a fine string of passes where he cut in well to wrong foot Gregory Nyapala, then picked the far post for his third of the game and Gor Mahia’s fourth.

The win puts Gor on top with 58 points after 29 matches.

Barren draw

At Kasarani, Tusker beat Western Stima 2-0 to remain in contention for the title. Substitute Obadiah Ndege turned the game around in the second-half, scoring in the 49th and 54th minutes to ensure the champions push the title race to the final day.

In Awendo, Sony Sugar effectively tossed out Oserian from the league with a 1-0 win. Earlier at the City Stadium, Mwangi Kiogera scored a brace as KCB beat Sofapaka 2-0.

The game between Chemelil and Thika United at the Thika Municipal Stadium ended in a barren draw.

Before then, Tusker had struggled to find a way through the resolute Stima defence.

A draw would have effectively locked them out of the race but coach Robert Matano made a wise decision to bring in Ndege and it worked.

In Awendo, Sony Sugar effectively tossed Oserian out of the league with a 1-0 win. Dennis Okoth scored the all important goal in the first half.
