Gor Mahia moved to the second spot in the Kenyan Premier League on Sunday after a 1-0 win over Sony Sugar at the City Stadium. Ivan Anguyo headed home in the 80th minute as Gor cut AFC Leopards’ lead to just two points.

Sony Sugar put up a spirited fight throughout the game, but their resistance was eventually broken by the Ugandan import’s bullet header following a Moses Otieno corner.

Though Gor dominated possession in midfield, the attacking pair of Rama Salim and Dan Sserenkuma had few chances.

Gor coach Zdravko Logarusic was forced into making changes when Joseph Njuguna once again limped off with an injury. His replacement, Kevin Omondi, gave a great account of himself covering well.

The moment of joy came in the 80th minute when a move initiated by Sserenkima and Moses Odhiambo resulted in a corner. Anguyo rose higher than all to give K’Ogalo the priceless win.

“We are still walking. I said I will look at the table when there will be nobody ahead of us. We still have a big fight,” said Gor coach Zdravko Logarusic.

Lapse in concentration

It was coach Zedekiah Otieno’s first return to City Stadium since fans forced him out of the club exactly a year ago.

“We accept defeat. We lacked concentration,” he said.

Gor now have 43 points, two behind Leopards.

Meanwhile, Leopards will on Tuesday move camp from their Moi Forces Nairobi base to Mumias where they will be preparing for the match on Saturday against Western Stima at the Bukhungu Stadium.
