Gor make light work of Borabu Chiefs at City
- K’Ogalo capitalise on experience to stifle opponents and reach tourney’s round three
Gor Mahia relied on their vast experience in the Kenyan Premier League to knock out Borabu Chiefs 5-2 in the second round of the FKF President’s Cup match on Sunday at Nairobi’s City Stadium.
The 12-time KPL winners had squandered their 2-0 lead after 20 minutes, when Jared Obwoge’s double in six minutes (30th and 36th minutes) ensured parity as both sides headed to half-time.
Gor defender Ivan Anguyo thundered home the opener after 12 minutes from close range following Robert Motanya’s lacklustre clearance of Kevin Ochieng’s free kick.
Ochieng doubles Gor’s advantage
Ochieng doubled Gor’s advantage when he tapped in from the six-metre box in yet another defensive gaffe.
Not to be deterred, Borabu players rose to the occasion, with Clinton Ondieki and Jackson Momanyi combining well to set up Chiefs’ first goal eight minutes after the re-start. After a brilliant exchange with Dennis Mongare, Obwoge scored Chiefs’ first goal before returning to six minutes later to score past a diving Fredrick Onyango. With teams level 2-2, K’Ogalo started playing with some urgency.
Gor tactician, Zdravko Logarusic introduced Ramadhan Salim, Dan Sserunkuma and Joseph Njuguna with Oscar Mbugua, Keving Ochieng and Kevin Omondi paving way.
Lavatsa, Salim score
Barely 13 minutes after the changes, Salim was presented with the best of chances, but watched as his feeble shot went inches wide.
Edwin Lavatsa then put smiles on the faces of Gor fans, scoring with a solo move in the 66th minute, before Salim lobbed in Gor’s fourth and Itubu Imbem completed the rout with a thunderous effort as the ‘Green Army’ roared in ecstasy.
“I’m happy with the results but I am not impressed with how we played. We played rather badly and were headed for a loss, hence the introduction of the three players just after half-time,” Logarusic said. “They (Borabu) are a good side with a bright future.”
In another match played in Naivasha on Sunday, hosts Karuturi Sport won 4-0 against Nairobi Provincial League outfit Nakumatt FC.
