Gor Mahia trio snub Harambee Stars for Super Cup

What you need to know:

  • The three were all part of the national team squad that is currently in camp in preparation for the qualifier against Sierra Leone next weekend.

Three Gor Mahia players will not feature for the national team in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier away to Sierra Leone on June 10.

The trio, Kenneth Muguna, Harun Shakava and Timothy Otieno, has travelled with the club for the inaugural SportPesa Super Cup scheduled to begin on June 5 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The three were all part of the national team squad that is currently in camp in preparation for the qualifier against Sierra Leone next weekend, but left for Tanzania on Friday afternoon for the week-long tournament.

Harambee Stars coach Stanley Okumbi said it was unfortunate that the trio refused to honour the call ups.

“That is their choice. I called them up but there is no way I could force them to turn up for training. In fact, Muguna and Otieno did not show up for training at all. It is only Shakava who communicated and asked for to be allowed to join his teammates for the tournament in Tanzania. There is nothing more I can do when it gets to that point,” Okumbi said.
