Champions (KPL) Gor Mahia on Thursday put on a sterling show to beat Bandari 2-0 in a mid-week Kenyan Premier League match at the Mbaraki Sports Club in Mombasa.

George “Blackberry" Odhiambo gave Gor the lead in the 53rd minute and an own goal by Felly Mulumba in injury-time handed the visitors the three points.

At the Muhoroni Stadium, Wycliffe Ochomo bagged a brace to give Muhoroni Youth a 2-0 win over Nairobi City Stars while in Machakos, Tusker and Mathare United failed to take a commanding lead atop the league standings after battling to a 2-2 draw in a thrilling encounter.

In Nakuru, John Mark Makwatta scored and provided an assist as Ulinzi Stars edged Chemelil Sugar 2-1. John Nairuka opened the scoring for the soldiers before Hillary Echesa restored parity for the visitors.

K’Ogalo controlled the match from the onset and created the first opportunity after 25 minutes when former Kakamega High School student Erick Ouma’s powerful shot nearly going in. Gor continued to create chances with being Ronald Omino, Jacques Tuyisenge and Godfrey Walusimbi all going close.

The home side did eventually settle in the match and almost took the lead through David King’atua whose shot was saved by Gor custodian Boniface Oluoch with seconds left to halftime.

Gor took the lead in the second half when Bandari’s defender Humphery Okoti’s attempted clearance hit Odhiambo and strolled home as Wilson Obungu was left rooted to his spot. The Dockers failed to trouble the Gor Mahia defence and the visitors made sure of the win with Mulumba’s own goal in the final minute.

OCHOMO SCORES AGAIN

In Muhoroni, the league’s top scorer Ochomo required just 30 seconds to net the opener and added his second nine minutes after the restart to move to nine goals at the top of the scoring charts.

City Stars showed little resistance in the first half allowing the hosts to raid from the flanks with skipper Abass Akinyemi and Ochomo coming close on the half an hour mark and 40th minute respectively.

“This is a big win for us. We have not lost in four matches, an indication the squad is gelling well,” Muhoroni coach James Omondi said after the match.

Table toppers Mathare United and Tusker settled for a 2-2 draw in Thursday’s grudge match played at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.

Eric Johanna and Michael Khamati scored a brace each as Mathare and Tusker maintained their position at first and second place in the KPL log respectively.

Khamati opened the scoring in the 34th second, before Johanna replied for Mathare in the fourth minute. Johanna put the slum boys ahead in the 35th minute with a stunning goal from the left that beat Tusker custodian David Okello.

MBOYA INJURED

A minute later, Khamati capitalised on Robert Mboya's sloppy goalkeeping to stab home the equaliser. Mboya had failed to deal with a cross from Noah Wafula, allowing Khamati to score before the goalkeeper was stretched out injured.

As expected, the game was highly entertaining, with both teams coming out full throttle in an attempt to get above the other.

POSTA WIN

A last minute strike by Calvin Odongo was enough to hand the promoted side the three points against a stubborn Ushuru side. Rangers are now third on the log, two points behind leaders Mathare United while Ulinzi are fourth on 19 points.

At the Awendo Green Stadium, Boniface Muchiri struck the lone goal of the match in the fifth minute as Sony Sugar beat high-riding Kakamega Homeboyz 1-0 in an end-to-end match on Thursday.
