What you need to know:

  • Timbe’s charges fine-tune for Sunday’s Caf Confederation tie against Platinum
  • Abondo scores in each half to hand K’Ogalo victory, Wafula own goal notwithstanding
  • Olunga, formerly of Thika United, created many chances for K’Ogalo in the first-half, but lacked the finishing power.

Reigning Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia on Wednesday beat Sofapaka 2-1 to clinch the DStv Super Cup trophy in an entertaining encounter played under floodlights at Nyayo National Stadium.

Ali Abondo twice for Gor, the second from a spot kick 22 minutes before time, to save his team a poor run in the pre-season that has seen them lose three out of seven friendly games.

After 24 minutes of trying, Abondo, who returned to Gor after two seasons at Tusker, was fed by Khalid Aucho before firing past Sofapaka goalkeeper David Okello who had committed himself outside the goal line.

In the 68th minute, Gor’s Michael Olunga collided with goalkeeper Okello inside the box and the referee signalled for a penalty which Abondo calmly slotted home for the second goal.

The Batoto ba Mungu, spotting new yellow jerseys, benefited from an own goal after Innocent Wafula slid the ball into his own net in the first minute of added time after poor communication.

SCORNG OPPORTUNITIES

The opening 10 minutes had produced fewer scoring opportunities at either end, but it was Gor who enjoyed greater ball possession.

Burundian national Abdul Razak Fiston came through with Sofapaka’s first real chance in the 17th minute after being put through by Danson Kago but his feeble shot was no trouble for custodian Boniface Oluoch.

Olunga, formerly of Thika United, created many chances for K’Ogalo in the first-half, but lacked the finishing power. He produced a marvellous piece of skill in the 33rd minute when he wove in and out of two Sofapaka challengers before his shot went way-ward off target.

“Some of the new signings haven’t had a chance to play with the team for long but it is very encouraging to see them put through this kind of performance. It shows that they are capable of handling the real assignments,” Gor coach Frank Nuttal said moments after the match.
