Gor Mahia keen on widening gap at the summit

What you need to know:

  • Gor Mahia captain Jerim Onyango and his deputy David ‘Calabar’ Owino will return to club duty after featuring for Harambee Stars in an international friendly match against Morocco earlier in the week.
  • Third-placed Tusker, who are six points off the pace, will wrap up the weekend fixtures with a duel against Muhoroni Youth in a floodlit fixture at Safaricom Kasarani Stadium on Sunday at 8pm.

With just four rounds of matches remaining, the Kenyan Premier League title race enters the most crucial stage this weekend.

After second-placed Sofapaka slashed Gor Mahia’s lead to a single point on Thursday, all eyes now shift to the latter’s meeting with Mathare United on Sunday at City Stadium.

Gor Mahia captain Jerim Onyango and his deputy David ‘Calabar’ Owino will return to club duty after featuring for Harambee Stars in an international friendly match against Morocco earlier in the week.

The two will be joined by Timothy Otieno, who has shaken off a bout of malaria that cost him a place in the national squad.

The club has also confirmed the availability of the league’s top scorer Dan Sserunkuma, who jetted into the country Friday evening together with Ugandan compatriots Godfrey Walusimbi and Geoffrey Kizito from a 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Togo.

FACE SOFAPAKA

The club’s assistant coach Frank Ouna said this is a match they can’t afford to lose, given that their next match will be against Sofapaka.

“We are prepared to fight until the end because we had anticipated that the race would go down to the wire. We intend to win all the remaining matches but do not consider any team as a weak opponent at this point,” Ouna said.

Mathare will go into the match in the backdrop of a 1-0 loss to former champions Tusker. In Saturday’s fixtures, Ulinzi Stars will host Western Stima at Afraha Stadium in Nakuru as bottom side Top Fry AllStars take on Bandari in Mombasa. Defeat for Top Fry, who have 16 points from 26 matches, will confirm their relegation from the top flight league.

Third-placed Tusker, who are six points off the pace, will wrap up the weekend fixtures with a duel against Muhoroni Youth in a floodlit fixture at Safaricom Kasarani Stadium on Sunday at 8pm.
