What you need to know:

  • Gor however failed to hold onto the lead, allowing Andrew Tololwa to peg them back with just six minutes left to end of play.
  • There were ugly scenes too early in the first-half when agitated Gor fans displeased with the calls, hurled water bottles onto the playing surface, but it did not to warrant stoppage of play.
  • The 1-1 scoreline however did not go down well with pockets of K’Oglao fans who confronted club assistant coach Frank Ouna after the match, accusing him of ‘misleading’ head coach Frank Nuttall. It took the intervention of skipper Jerim Onyango to cool down the fans.

Gor Mahia squandered a chance to reclaim the top spot in the Kenyan Premier League after drawing 1-1 with Tusker at the Safaricom Kasarani Stadium on Sunday.

In other matches, Sony Sugar and Bandari drew 1-1 in Awendo while at the Nyayo National Stadium, 2008 champions Mathare United overpowered KRA 2-0.

After a nervy first-half at Kasarani where players engaged in tough tackles and heated exchanges that attracted three yellow cards, Gor’s Dan Sserunkuma broke the deadlock at the hour mark with a neatly converted penalty after he had  been elbowed to the ground in the six-yard  box by Tusker’s combative right back Joackins Atudo.

Gor however failed to hold onto the lead, allowing Andrew Tololwa to peg them back with just six minutes left to end of play.

PLAYED WELL

Winger Kevin Kimani did the donkey work from the left wing, picking out Were in the box and the latter did well to stab home a rebound after Jerim Onyango had thwarted his initial effort.

The point took K’Ogalo’s tally to 43, same as Sofapaka who lead the league by virtue of a superior goal difference. Tusker are third on 41 points.

Like the ill-tempered first leg tie that  ended in 1-1 draw at the Nyayo  National Stadium and saw two Tusker  players sent off, yesterday’s  duel attracted no red card, but the bookings were plenty, with Gor’s Godfrey Walusimbi, Collins ‘Gatusso’ Okoth  and Tusker left back Aboud Omar being shown yellow cards.

There were ugly scenes too early in the first-half when agitated Gor fans displeased with the calls, hurled water bottles onto the playing surface, but it did not to warrant stoppage of play.

The 1-1 scoreline however did not go down well with pockets of K’Oglao fans who confronted club assistant coach Frank Ouna after the match, accusing him of ‘misleading’ head coach Frank Nuttall. It took the intervention of skipper Jerim Onyango to cool down the fans.

“My assistants just give their input, we work as a team. They advise, after which I make my own decisions,” Nuttall said in Ouna’s defence.
