Gor’s good run in league leaves Nuttall purring

What you need to know:

  • “This, for me, is the best performance of the season. The boys played with the right intensity and this motivates us to continue winning,” Nuttall said in his post-match analysis.
  • It is a match in which many expected a wider margin of victory from the brewers, considering that Ingwe players had sat out training a whole week demanding salaries owed to them by the club.
  • Francis Kimanzi’s boys have had a sluggish start to the league with them winning only four of their nine matches so far, but have improved with their last two matches where they have recorded straight victories.

Not many can argue against Gor Mahia’s ability to successfully defend the Kenyan Premier League title for the second successive time this season.

Not after their performance on Sunday against Ushuru that saw them win 2-0. The 14-time Kenya champions have continued show that they are full of guile and gristle and even Ushuru, who have trounced two title contenders in AFC Leopards and Tusker already this season, found it impossible to disrupt Gor’s eight-match unbeaten run.

Kagere and Olunga displayed class yet again, scoring two spectacular goals to leave coach Frank Nuttall purring with satisfaction at the end of the match.

“This, for me, is the best performance of the season. The boys played with the right intensity and this motivates us to continue winning,” Nuttall said in his post-match analysis.
On Saturday, Tusker were largely unconvincing in their 1-0 victory against AFC Leopards that saw the brewers rise to fourth in the standings.

Francis Kimanzi’s boys have had a sluggish start to the league with them winning only four of their nine matches so far, but have improved with their last two matches where they have recorded straight victories.

DEMANDING SALARIES

It is a match in which many expected a wider margin of victory from the brewers, considering that Ingwe players had sat out training a whole week demanding salaries owed to them by the club.

Tusker coach Francis Kimanzi even conceded publicly that he had expected more from the match, but said that he is building the team’s confidence and composure which had been eroded by their sluggish start to the season.

“I specifically instructed the boys to slow down the game because although the opponents hadn’t trained collectively, I was sure that the players had been training individually so I advised them against making unnecessary runs. However, I feel we deserved more from the match considering the number of chances we created,” he said.

But Ingwe weren’t the only team that relinquished points at the weekend. Western Stima also lost 1-0 to Muhoroni Youth in a match that was halted for 20 minutes due to fan trouble.
Chemelil Sugar also suffered a 3-1 defeat away to Sony Sugar who have now climbed to sixth on the log with 14 points from eight matches.

Thika United’s resurgence also continued to play out at the weekend when they beat Nairobi City Stars by a solitary goal at their Thika Municipal Stadium home ground.

This result hoisted the milkmen to second position in the log, just two points behind league leaders Gor Mahia who have one match in hand.

Domestic cup holders Sofapaka, who were exempted from the weekend action will play KCB tomorrow at the Machakos County Stadium.
