What you need to know:

  • At Ruaraka, Tusker’s campaign was left in tatters after they failed to win their third match on the spin, losing 2-1 to Sofapaka while at the Safaricom Kasarani Stadium, Ushuru held their nerve to overpower KCB 2-1.
  • In a contest where Tusker were equal, based on chances created and possession, they drew level via Ghanaian forward Stephen Owusu, who got off the bench to score from close range, but it wasn’t enough.

Champions Gor Mahia stretched their lead at the summit of the Kenyan Premier League table to 33 points, nine clear of closest challengers Sofapaka after beating stubborn Muhoroni Youth 1-0 at the Kisumu County Stadium Saturday.

Impressive forward Michael Olunga returned to scoring ways with the solitary strike, his seventh of the campaign that confirmed the three points in a contest they dominated for large spells.

At Ruaraka, Tusker’s campaign was left in tatters after they failed to win their third match on the spin, losing 2-1 to Sofapaka while at the Safaricom Kasarani Stadium, Ushuru held their nerve to overpower KCB 2-1.

At Afraha Stadium, basement side Nakuru All Stars rallied from two goals down to force a dramatic 2-2 draw with Chemelil Sugar.

In Kisumu, Olunga scored early in the first half to give the defending champions a deserved victory. The visitors should have broken the deadlock early in the match when Olunga’s shot missed the target by inches with goalkeeper David Kiptoo well-beaten.

At Ruaraka, veteran striker John Baraza, who turns 38 on June 3, stole the show at Ruaraka when he scored for the sixth time this term in their victory over the brewers, which moves them to position two on the log on 24 points. Deep lying midfielder Maurice Odipo, playing in unfamiliar left back position, nodded home the winner eight minutes to time.

WASN'T ENOUGH

In a contest where Tusker were equal, based on chances created and possession, they drew level via Ghanaian forward Stephen Owusu, who got off the bench to score from close range, but it wasn’t enough.

The outcome left their campaign in tatters as coach Francis Kimanzi’s job now hangs in a balance.

In Nakuru, Chemelil opened  their account in the 10th minute when Meshack Karani soared high to head in past goalkeeper Shayne Indimuli. Karani then made it a double two minutes later capitalising on a mistake by Teddy Siwa to plant the ball home. Stars clawed back through David Seda and Ongoro Ochako.

At Kasarani, Ushuru came from behind to beat visiting KCB 2-1, thanks to a Moses Arita’s brace.

The bankers had gone ahead after midfielder Chrispinus Odhiambo had capitalised on goalkeeper Ali Kimera’s blunder in the 31st minute to net his first goal this season while in Mombasa, Bandari and Mathare settled for a barren draw.
