What you need to know:

  • Last season was a no-holds-barred clash between the two, Gor winning the first leg on the field and the second leg in the board room after that match ended prematurely after hot heads either side of the divide invaded the pitch.
  • Sony, who were made to play their season’s home match against Gor at Afraha Stadium – and lost – will be bouyed by the recent IDCC decision to order a replay of their second leg tie with Leopards.

Five Kenyan Premier League matches are on the cards this weekend but the pick of them is easily the enticing clash between Gor Mahia and Sony Sugar at City Stadium Sunday.

And this has nothing to do with the fact that Gor Mahia are 13-time Kenya champions while Sony are just one-time title holders. It all has to do with the recent intense rivalry between two sides that, ironically, draw their followers from the same fan base.

NO-HOLDS-BARRED

Last season was a no-holds-barred clash between the two, Gor winning the first leg on the field and the second leg in the board room after that match ended prematurely after hot heads either side of the divide invaded the pitch.

Sony, who were made to play their season’s home match against Gor at Afraha Stadium – and lost – will be bouyed by the recent IDCC decision to order a replay of their second leg tie with Leopards.

KPL had awarded the match to AFC after Sony declined to travel to Nakuru to play insisting they game should be held at Awendo.

Sony coach Zedekiah Otieno has declared he is going for all three points but admits playing Gor will be a tough challenge.

The sugar miller will be without key player Victor Ademba, who is serving a suspension, and Sylvester Wanyama, who is bereaved.

“We have prepared very well. It is just unfortunate that we will be missing some players but we are well motivated especially after the KPL disciplinary committee listened to our appeal. I believe the boys will measure up,” Otieno, a former Gor coach, told Saturday Nation Sport Friday.

K’Ogalo coach Bobby Williamson could be handling the side for the last time on Sunday and will need to lift them up quickly from their Cecafa-Kagame Cup blues. Gor failed to win a single match in the tournament and were kicked out in the first round.

“We returned from Rwanda with vital lessons, and the whole team is focused on retaining the title,” Williamson said. The partisan and vocal Green Army will be backing Gor all the way Sunday.
