Harambee Starlets fall to Real Betis in Spain

National women’s football team Harambee Starlets on Wednesday suffered a 2-0 defeat to Real Betis of Spain in the semi-finals of the Cotif Women’s Football tournament in Valencia, Spain.

Second half goals from Paula Moreno and Maria Bernal sunk Starlets. They were scheduled to tackle Espanyol in a third place play-off Thursday evening.

Speaking from Valencia, coach David Ouma said he was proud of the girls’ performance despite the defeat.

He said they gained valuable experience at the tournament. 

“They have defeated teams that have a lot of support in their countries. With proper preparations and motivation, they are capable of becoming one of the most successful teams in Africa.

“The exposure they have received is a proper build-up as they prepare for the Cecafa women’s championship as well as Afcon championship,” said Owino.

The Kenyan Women Premier League top scorer netted a hat-trick in their first match, and a brace in their game against Benfica. Neddy Atieno scored one of the six goals that the team plundered in the tournament.
