What you need to know:

  • Amrouche will if appointed, will replace Portuguese trainer Mariano Barreto
  • Former Antelopes coach Sewnet Bishaw is said to be also considered for the post in what would mark his third return.
  • The Algerian-born Belgian trainer also never lost a match at home
  • Ethiopia face Kenya in the Chan qualifiers

Former Harambee Stars coach Adel Amrouche is on the verge of joining the Ethiopia national football team in the same capacity, Nation Sport can reveal.

Nation Sport understands the Belgian, 47, has officially been approached by representatives of the Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) in the past few days with a three-year deal.

Amrouche will if appointed, will replace Portuguese trainer Mariano Barreto who had his contracted with the Walya Antelopes terminated at the start of this week.

The former TP Mazembe and Burundi national team trainer stopped short of neither confirming nor refuting the reports on Wednesday.

"Ethiopia will provide a good opportunity for me to guide a team to the Africa Nations Championships (Chan) and Africa Cup of Nations tournaments in the next two years. The two competitions are my remaining targets in Africa and I will not rest until I achieve them," Amrouche said.

BISHAW EYES POST

Former Antelopes coach Sewnet Bishaw is said to be also considered for the post in what would mark his third return.

Amrouche led Kenya to winning a first regional Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup title in over a decade in almost a decade in 2013. His two-year reign with the team also produced an impressive 1-1 draw away to then Africa champions Nigeria in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.

The Algerian-born Belgian trainer also never lost a match at home when he was on the touchline. He was, however, dismissed after falling out of favour with Football Kenya Federation (FKF) in the wake of a 1-0 aggregate loss to Lesotho last year in the preliminary stage of the 2015 Africa Nations Cup qualifiers.

Interestingly, Ethiopia face Kenya in the Chan qualifiers, and has been pooled alongside Algeria, Lesotho and Seychelles in their 2017 Nations Cup qualifying group.
