Bandari fell 2-0 to DR Congo side St Eloi Lupopo in their Confederation Cup preliminary round, first leg match at the Stade Frédéric Kibassa Maliba in Lubumbashi on Sunday.

Lupopo scored through Mutshimba Mugala in the 36th minute and Heritie Makambo deep in stoppage time to leave Bandari with a mountain to climb in their return leg in Nairobi in a fortnight’s time.

Bandari coach Twahir Muhiddin elected to start with former Mathare United and Chemelil Sugar striker Meshach Karani, Shaban Kenga and Edwin Lavatsa   upfront in a 4-3-3 formation with Danny Sserunkuma on the bench.

Humphrey Okoti, Anthony “Muki”  Kimani  and David King’atua claimed the three midfield slots while Edwin Wafula,  David Gateri , Shariff Mohammed and Felly Mulumba marshalled the  defence, offering protection to Wilson Obungu in goal.

WIN BY THREE GOALS

Bandari will now have to win the return leg by three goals to advance to round one of the competition.

Bandari’s defeat  leaves  Kenyans  clubs in the continental scene facing the danger of being tossed out at the first hurdle after Gor Mahia  were also defeated 2-1 at the Nyayo National Stadium on Saturday  by Madagascar’s  side, Caisse Nationale de Prévoyance Sociale Sport (CNaPS) in the Champions League.
