Prowling ‘Ingwe’, clinical Sofapaka storm semi-finals

AFC Leopards’ hopes of featuring in next year’s Caf Confederation Cup were boosted on Saturday when they clawed their way into the semi-finals of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Cup following an emphatic 4-1 victory over Karuturi Sports in Mumias.

Ingwe will meet the winner of Sunday’s quarter-final match between Gor Mahia and Muhoroni Youth at City Stadium.

At Mumias Sports Complex, Leopards went ahead in the 10th minute when Benard Mang’oli scored after being set up by Mike Barasa.

Karuturi equalise

But Karuturi equalised through Mustapha Ogutu, who beat Patrick Matasi with a simple flick in the 29th minute.

Victor Ochieng’ added AFC’s second goal in the 40th minute for a 2-1 lead at half-time.

But the second-half of the match was a one way traffic as a howler from Karuturi goalkeeper Noah Ayuko resulted in the third goal from Ochieng in the 63rd minute.

Mike Barasa scored the fourth after Ayuko misjudged a close-range shot.

Leopards coach Jan Koops was elated with the win: “We are happy with the victory. Everybody, including the players, knows we are desperate for silverware this season.”

Sofapaka beat KRA

At City Stadium, 2010 Premier League champions Sofapaka beat KRA 2-1 to qualify for the semi-finals scheduled for October 13-14.

Michael Macharia put KRA ahead in the 24th minute before George Owino equalised for coach Stewart Hall’s charges two minutes later.

Osborn Monday notched the winner through a spot-kick after Humphrey Mieno was brought down in the box.

Gor Mahia host Muhoroni Youth at City Stadium on Sunday, while Tusker take on Talanta FC at Kasarani in other quarter-final fixtures.

Gor Mahia coach, Zdravco Logarusic expects his boys to continue their good form but Muhoroni coach, Alfred Imonje has said they are ready for today’s encounter.

In Mombasa, leaders Bandari FC put up a sterling performance but it was not enough as they were held 0-0 by visiting Bidco United in a crucial National Division One Zone ‘A’ match at the Mbaraki Sports Club.
