What you need to know:

  • Innocent Wafula had given Gor Mahia the lead in the 6th minute.
  • The defending champions have 52 points from 20 matches.

Enoch Agwanda came off to score as Gor Mahia secured a laboured 2-0 win over Ushuru in a Kenyan Premier League match at the Nairobi City Stadium on Wednesday.

Agwanda was summoned by coach Frank Nuttall with 25 minutes to go coming in for Godfrey Walusimbi and made an immediate impact winning a penalty after being upended in the box by Ushuru custodian Samuel Odhiambo.

He picked himself up to convert the spot kick to wrap up the match for the runaway league leaders. Innocent Wafula had given Gor Mahia the lead in the 6th minute.

Fatigue was however evident within K'Ogalo's rank as they struggled to find their rhythm. Kenyatta's team deployed long and high balls which Gor struggled to cope with.

Gor striker Michael Olunga had early chances inside the first three minutes but he could not make them count. He later made up for the misses after breaking down the left to pick Wafula with a neat delivery and the latter beautifully rammed in.

"The match did not go well. We made mistakes which proved costly and that was the difference," Ushuru coach Ken Kenyatta said after the match.

After the opening goal, the match turned into a cagey affair as each side struggled to keep possession and lock out the enemy from their territory.

Try as they may, Ushuru could find no way even against a Gor side that lacked fluency.

TACTICAL CHANGE

Kenyatta made a tactical change after the interval, bringing in Edwin Misiko and Charles Okwemba for Barack Odhiambo and Muhammad Hassan respectively but the fresh legs could not unlock the K'Ogalo defence.

For Gor, the victory presented an extended unbeaten run that has now stretched to 20 league games on the trot.

The defending champions have 52 points from 20 matches.
