Jesse Were claimed a brace as Tusker made it two wins on the trot when they floored Nairobi City Stars 2-1 in a Kenyan Premier League match at the Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday.

At the Awendo Green Stadium, Samuel Odhiambo scored the lone goal as hosts Sony Sugar collected maximum points after registering a slender 1-0 win over Ushuru.

In an early kick off at Nyayo, Chemelil Sugar registered a similar win over Kenya Commercial Bank.

David Ojuang powered his header to the far left corner of the net in the 42nd  minute from a Collins Kisuya corner to hand the Mike Mururi’s Chemelil a priceless away win.

The defeat was a severe blow to the bankers, who succumbed to their second defeat on the trot after a 3-1 hiding at the hands of Bandari in their last outing.

The bankers have been poor on the road, and even at home on Sunday, the performance was uninspiring.

Raymond Murugi, who has two league goals under his belt this term, spurned their best chance at the half-hour mark when he failed to sweep the ball home from the six yard area after being put through by Yusuf Juma.

Despite the victory, coach Mururi took issue with the performance of his centre forward Meshack Karani, who had a bad day in office.

“I will have to work on Karani (Meschack). His finishing was poor and he will need to improve on that front. He was the main culprit of the afternoon. We should have won by a wider margin,” Mururi lamented.

In a late contest at same venue, Tusker survived a scare as a re-energized City Stars came hard hammer and tongs for large spells of the second half but they bravely held on.

CONSOLATION GOAL

The brewers bossed the game in the first half, but after the breather, the Paul Nkata coached Stars played with purpose.

Joseph Sakwa pulled a consolation for his side with a beautiful strike in the 69th minute and forced Tusker goalie Farouk Shikahlo to a stretched save in the 84th minute with a fierce long range drive.

Were was however the toast of the evening. As captain, he led from the front opening his account with an assured finish in the box in the third minute, capitalising on a defensive blunder by Arthur Museve to roll the ball home before adding another from the spot in the 37th minute.

City Stars, relegated last term, alongside Nakuru All Stars after a poor campaign, have been the whipping boys since being re-admitted.
