Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has been named Barclays Premier League manager of the season for the third time.

In his second spell at the club, the Portuguese, 52, guided Chelsea to their first Premier League title in five years and a League Cup success.

Blues midfielder Eden Hazard, who scored 20 goals for the champions, was named player of the season.

He succeeds Tony Pulis, who was named 2013-14 manager of the year after he masterminded Crystal Palace’s remarkable escape from relegation.

Hazard’s team-mates John Terry, Cesc Fabregas and Nemanja Matic were also nominated for the player of the season award, as were Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero, Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea, Tottenham striker Harry Kane and Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez. Since the award was introduced for the 1993-94 season, former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has dominated, of course, winning the trophy 11 times.

By winning this year, Jose Mourinho is now joint-second with Arsene Wenger on three, and only other men to win it are Tony Pulis, Alan Padew, Harry Redknapp, George Burley and Kenny Dalglish. Meanwhile, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers insisted yesterday club owners Fenway Sports Group would not back down in the acrimonious battle over Raheem Sterling’s contract dispute.

“The ownership have shown their strength in their time here,” Rodgers said. “At every opportunity when they have had to show that strength - whether it be with a player or other elements of the club - they have done that.”

Fenway proved previously in their handling of Luis Suarez they will not be bullied by players agitating for a move.

After turning down a $156,000-a-week contract offer in January, Sterling is said to have decided to seek a transfer to a club playing in the Champions League next term. And the comments about Sterling “definitely not” signing a new contract even for £900,000-a-week made by agent Aidy Ward, although subsequently disputed by him, cut little ice with John W Henry across the Atlantic.
