What you need to know:

  • As it stands though, leaders Gor Mahia have a slight advantage given that they hold a one-point lead over their nearest challengers with a game in hand
  • Sofapaka, who are seeking to reclaim the title they last won in 2009 in their debut season, squeezed a narrow 1-0 win over Muhoroni Youth at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos to stay within sight of Gor Mahia

The fight for the Kenyan Premier League title is shaping up into a three-horse race going into the final five matches of the season.

After the weekend matches, champions Gor Mahia, Sofapaka and Tusker emerged as the front runners for the league title.

As it stands though, leaders Gor Mahia have a slight advantage given that they hold a one-point lead over their nearest challengers with a game in hand.

From 24 outings, K’Ogalo have amassed 47 points averaging 1.96 points a game.

Should they win their next match against the unpredictable Bandari at City Stadium on Wednesday, they will restore a four-point lead over the second-placed Sofapaka.

EPIC SHOW
On Saturday, K’Ogalo produced one of their best performances this season with a 2-0 victory over Chemelil Sugar to give new coach Frank Nuttall his first win since taking charge of the glamour club slightly under a month ago.

“The players were fantastic today but we know from this point every match will be tough. It’s still a long way to the end of the season,” Nuttall said after the match.

Indeed, going by the current form and quality of their two major challengers for the gong, Tusker and Sofapaka, there are high chances of the race going down to the wire.

Sofapaka, who are seeking to reclaim the title they last won in 2009 in their debut season, squeezed a narrow 1-0 win over Muhoroni Youth at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos to stay within sight of Gor Mahia.

STAY FOCUSED

However, Sofapaka coach Sam Timbe has stressed the need for his team to remain focused.

“We will take one match at a time. We are looking forward to our next game,” Timbe told Daily Nation Sport.

Sofapaka still have an unfinished business with Gor Mahia with the two teams set to lock horns on October 26 in Machakos in what could possibly determine the destiny of the league title.

Tusker coach Francis Kimanzi will in the meantime hope that the depth in his squad will work for him in the final run-ins.

Of the top three title contenders, it’s only Kimanzi who has been afforded the luxury of rotating his strike force.

Tusker’s good run thus far has largely been as a result of the ruthlessness of their forwards.
