KPL teams have big fight on their hands to elude relegation

What you need to know:

  • Last weekend, they mauled City Stars 5-0 in Nairobi to close the gap between the two sides to just one point.
  • Sofapaka will lock horns with fellow relegation threatened Ushuru on Saturday.
  • In position 14 on the log, and having been winless in five games, so far, Ushuru are lingering in the danger zone.

With only nine rounds of matches left before this year’s Kenyan Premier League season draws to a close, four teams are battling to escape the relegation axe.

However, things look bleak for Sofapaka and Nairobi City Stars, having occupied the bottom positions on the log all season. Mathematically, they have a fighting chance of leaving the red zone if they step up their performance within the next two months. Although they have only won just three games so far, Batoto ba Mungu are showing signs of rejuvenation.

Sofapaka coach David Ouma, who brought on board veterans Moses “Dube” Odhiambo, Noah Abich and Eric Ochieng in the midseason transfer window, remains optimistic that his team will play in the top-tier next season.

“Most of the problems we faced in the first leg such as inexperienced players and irregularly training have been addressed. Players are now motivated, they are in good shape,” Ouma said.

Sofapaka will lock horns with fellow relegation threatened Ushuru on Saturday. In position 14 on the log, and having been winless in five games, so far, Ushuru are lingering in the danger zone.

Thika United, coached by James Nandwa, are the other likely relegation suspects. However, they have shown signs of recovery. Although they have collected points against top-ranked Tusker and Mathare United in recent matches, this only gives them a 10-point breathing space from the drop zone.
