Kakamega Homeboyz on Wednesday ended Ulinzi Stars’ unbeaten start to the 2017 SportPesa Premier League season with a 1-0 win at Mumias Sports Complex.

Wycliffe Ochomo’s sixth minute goal was enough for Mike Mururi’s charges to stun the title-chasing soldiers in the ill-tempered match in Mumias.

But the burly striker was given matching orders by referee Anthony Ogwayo for a dangerous tackle on Ulinzi defender Mohammed Hassan at the stroke of first half.

The physical match also saw the whistler Ogwayo flash six yellow cards. Both sides received three cautions for fouls committed.

Ulinzi should have opened the scoring as early as in the second minute but Cliff Kasuti’s left wing cross was headed into the hands of goalkeeper David Juma.

Homeboyz mounted relentless attacks were rewarded in the sixth minute when Ochomo headed home a left wing cross from Meshack Karani for the opener.

The early exchanges also saw the tri of Moses Chikati, Churchill Muloma and Geoffrey Kokoyo go into the referee’s book for reckless fouls.

Homeboyz coach Mururi was a happy man after the match.

“The match was tough. We managed to utilise the rare chance we got to defeat our opponents,” Mururi said.

Ulinzi tactician Benjamin Nyangweso, whose side had not lost a match in their opening six matches, said few mistakes cost them the match.

“We had numerous scoring chances but they could not be converted into goals,” he regretted.
