Kenya will on Driday tackle Zambia as the 12th edition of the Cosafa Under-17 Championship gets underway at the Stade St Francois Xavier in Port Louis, Mauritius.

The Andreas Spier-led Kenyan youngsters were drawn in Group ‘B’ alongside Zambia, Malawi and Madagascar where they will battle it out for a slot in the semi-finals.

The top two teams in each group will advance to the last four of the competition.

Spier told Daily Nation Sport that the tournament will be a good outing for the Kenyan juniors as they prepare for the next month’s African Under-17 Championships qualifier against Cameroon.

“There is a very young team and we have a long, long way to go because we don’t even have a definite starting line-up. I have worked with them for only two weeks and they are improving technically gradually,” Spier said before the team left for Mauritius on Tuesday.

“At this point, the most important thing is the exposure. We cannot say that we are aiming at the title because we have just created the team, but I am certain that we shall get there,” he said.

Kenya was invited to the tournament after the Young Mambas of Mozambique withdrew due to lack of funds. Kenya will face Madagascar and Malawi on Sunday and Tuesday respectively.
