What you need to know:

  • Which Mathare United will turn up this season?
  • Is it the old Mathare United associated with current coach Francis Kimanzi during his previous stint with the club, a team that played with swagger and purpose while chalking up impressive and consistent results?
  • Or will it be the more recent side that has regularly struggled to impress in the Premier League and were eventually consigned to hovering between mid-table and the relegation zone?
  • It is perhaps with this in mind that the Slum Boys chairman, Bob Munro, brought back Kimanzi to steer the club into the 2016 Kenyan Premier League season.

Is it the old Mathare United associated with current coach Francis Kimanzi during his previous stint with the club, a team that played with swagger and purpose while chalking up impressive and consistent results?

Or will it be the more recent side that has regularly struggled to impress in the Premier League and were eventually consigned to hovering between mid-table and the relegation zone?

It is perhaps with this in mind that the Slum Boys chairman, Bob Munro, brought back Kimanzi to steer the club into the 2016 Kenyan Premier League season.

In turn, the highly qualified Kimanzi - himself still smarting from an average two-season outing at Tusker FC - quickly summoned his trusted lieutenant, Salim Ali, to help steady the ship.

Kimanzi is, however, cautiously optimistic of masterminding improved results. He said: “Coming here, obviously after a while away, where I gathered vital lessons and experience, I want to perform well.”

Munro said: “We know what these two coaches can deliver. They will bring experience, stability and results, the three aspects we are lacking in the team.”
