Marko Vasiljevic: Noose tightens on neck of Leopards coach

What you need to know:

  • The Serbian coach arrived in Nairobi from Mombasa by train and headed straight into the club’s secretariat for a meeting chaired by Ingwe Secretary General Oscar Igaida.
  • “This may be my last moment with you and I wish you all the best,” Marko told his players inside the changing room after the Sunday defeat.
  • Under Serbian coach Vaselijic, Ingwe have only managed two wins from 10 games and now lie fourth from bottom on 10 points in as many matches.

Thirty-year-old AFC Leopards coach Marko Vasiljevic was on Monday summoned by the club’s management after it emerged that he had neither the qualifications nor the coaching experience required to manage a club of Ingwe’s stature.

The Serbian coach arrived in Nairobi from Mombasa by train and headed straight into the club’s secretariat for a meeting chaired by Ingwe Secretary General Oscar Igaida.

It was the second time the Serbian coach stood before the Ingwe top brass to explain why he should retain his job, and he struggled to defend his poor return that has seen the club sink to fourth last in the SportPesa Premier League standings.

Vasiljevic, who had escaped with a warning when he was first summoned by the club’s management following their 1-0 loss to league returnees KCB, had, however, prepared for the worst, and had bade his players goodbye following Saturday’s 4-1 thrashing by Bandari.

“This may be my last moment with you and I wish you all the best,” Marko told his players inside the changing room after the Sunday defeat.

At the closed door afternoon meeting that lasted four hours, the club officials pondered over the future of the club especially after it emerged that chairman Dan Mule is on the verge of tendering his resignation.

Also on the agenda was the matter of Rwandan coach Casa Mbungo whose resume had impressed the Ingwe officialdom and who is seriously being considered for the coaching opposition at the club.

“Mule is in Zambia. I haven’t received any letter or phone call from him indicating that he has resigned from his position so I am treating those reports as rumours. I will be in a good position to answer all your queries at 6pm,” Igaida said when reached for comment.

Ingwe have been dealing with a series of poor results for a decade now, and this has seen them change coaches frequently within that period

If appointed, Mbungo will be Ingwe’s 27th coach since they returned to the top flight in 2009.

Under Serbian coach Vaselijic, Ingwe have only managed two wins from 10 games and now lie fourth from bottom on 10 points in as many matches.

The team was humiliatingly knocked out of the SportPesa Super Cup a week ago in their first match and have only won once in their last five league outings.
