Robert Matano started his tenure as AFC Leopards coach on a victorious note at the weekend, guiding the 13-time Kenyan Premier League champions to their first win in 10 games.

Ingwe’s 1-0 victory over Bandari away in Mombasa on Saturday was a sweet relief to the fans who have had to contend with six losses and three draws in the last two and half months.

The club’s supporters are now looking up to the former Tusker and Ulinzi Stars coach to drive the rebuilding process and ultimately help them out of the performance rut that has stuck with them for three seasons now.

“I must congratulate my players on securing this victory which will boost our chances of climbing up the league table. We missed a number of good chances but what matter is the three points. It is a difficult job to steer the team back on track, but that is why they have chosen me to do it,” Matano said after the Saturday clash.

Matano’s next assignment will be against Super League side Bidco United in the GOtv Shield which enters the round of 16 this weekend.

Meanwhile, tension is building at Tusker’s Ruaraka base as the champions drop down the league table to fourth. The last time the brewers won was on May 28 against Ingwe. Last weekend, Tusker lost 1-0 to Western Stima in Kisumu, their first defeat in seven such match-ups and their second consecutive loss of the season.

From joint table toppers last weekend, the brewers have now dropped to fourth place on the log behind leaders Ulinzi, Posta Rangers and Gor Mahia who have a game in hand.

Gor were exempted from league duty last weekend in light of their taxing engagement against English Premier League side Everton last Thursday in Dar es Salaam that ended in a decent 2-1 score line.
