Mathare United tactician Francis Kimanzi has been feted as the pioneer winner of the monthly Coach of the Month award.
The award, which is an initiative of the Sports Journalist Association of Kenya and Fidelity Insurance aims at feting outstanding coaches in the SportPesa Premier League every month.
And the Dutch trained Kimanzi was selected for his team’s impeccable run in the month of February that saw his side score seven goals in three matches, a highlight of which was the 5-2 drubbing of former champions Sofapaka at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.
For his heroics, Kimanzi took home a personalised trophy and Sh50,000.
“Of course, it’s a surprise (to be selected) and a real big one. We were very ambitious at the beginning of the season that we would do better (this term).
“It’s good that the journalist have recognised the people who make the players better,” he said Tuesday at the team’s training base in Pangani shortly after receiving the award.
“Every team wants to push and every coach wants to do better. The pressure will always be there and every week has been different,” he added.
Kimanzi said that contrary to Tusker where he worked last term but endured a torrid spell, the presence of veteran inspirational players at Mathare like Noah Abich, George ‘Wise’ Owino and Obadiah Ndege is helping the boys play with hunger and determination.
