What you need to know:

  • The sparse crowd at the 30,000-seater Nyayo Stadium watched on as the home team found the back of the net on two occasions, only for both attempts to be disallowed for various reasons.
  • Leopards then seemed to lose their bearing as the match wore on, as manifested in a couple of missed passes from Charles Okwemba and Bernard Mang’oli, as well as managing just a few shots on goal.

Muhoroni Youth escaped with a point from Wednesday’s action-packed Kenya Premier League clash with AFC Leopards at the Nyayo National Stadium following a barren draw.

In Machakos, Sofapaka bagged maximum points at the expense of visiting Mathare United at the Kenyatta Stadium.

The sparse crowd at the 30,000-seater Nyayo Stadium watched on as the home team found the back of the net on two occasions, only for both attempts to be disallowed for various reasons.

In the opening chance, Noah Wafula deflected a fierce Jacob Keli goal-bound shot into the opposition’s net, but the Kenya international was ruled out for offside.

Then James Situma directed his shot into the net 15 minutes after the interval, but the defender was adjudged to have picked undue advantage over Muhoroni custodian Allan Owiny in the preceeding moments.

Muhoroni had their moments to sneak in a goal against the run of play in the closing stages of both halves. In one of the chances, Ezekiel Otuoma tested Leopards goalie Wycliffe Kasaya from long range in the 44th minute but the former was equal to the task.

Kasaya had been forced into an acrobatic save to tip over an improvised shot from Enos Ochieng two minutes earlier.

FANS BLOCKED TEAM BUS

Leopards then seemed to lose their bearing as the match wore on, as manifested in a couple of missed passes from Charles Okwemba and Bernard Mang’oli, as well as managing just a few shots on goal.

“We came for a draw and everybody is happy with this result. It was important to maintain the team shape because they (Leopards) keep changing positions,” Otuoma, who was named man of the match, said.

Before the match, there was commotion outside the stadium. In what the home fans termed as a ‘follow-up’ from the first leg tie earlier this year, they blocked the Muhoroni team bus upon arrival at the venue. Police quickly moved in to stem the stand-off and arrested two female fans. Nobody was injured in the incident.

In Machakos, Sofapaka’s deadly duo Enock Agwanda and Clifton Miheso combined to produce the only goal of the game against Mathare United.
