Nakuru Region edge football champions Nyanza

Nakuru Region’s football team beat defending champions Nyanza 2-1 in the national primary schools championships which kicked off in Kisumu on Monday.

Evans Ongayo of Lake Region opened the scoring in the 14th minute.

However, it was just as matter of time as Kevin Koech restored parity in the 28th minute before Ibrahim Ekale gave Nakuru the winner in the 48th minute.

In the girls’ category, Lake Region impressed the fans, humiliating Nzoia Region 6-2 in the first encounter.

Eunice Auma raised the Lake Region’s hopes of retaining the title after netting in the second, sixth and ninth minutes before Lavender Lihemo grabbed a brace for Nzoia in the 16th and 29th minutes for a 3-2 scoreline at the breather.

Only three minutes into the second half, Lake Region added another goal courtesy of Lucy Mugambi.

Ivon Akinyi also netted in the 59th minute before Asha Atieno scored in the 80th minute for a 6-2 final result in favour of Lake Region.

In other girls’ matches, Metropolitan from Nairobi Region brought down Northern 6-0 as Nakuru beat Coast 2-0.

In handball, Nzoia hammered Aberdare 24-9 in Pool A. In volleyball, Aberdare Region trounced Coast Region 3-2. The Coast team had beaten Aberdare 25-14 in the first encounter.

The Kenya Primary School Sports Association ball games, which conclude tomorrow, are taking place at the Kisumu Polytechnic and have attracted more than 1,500 pupils and over 300 sports teachers.
