New order in the beautiful game as old faces leave

What you need to know:

  • The former FKF president Sam Nyamweya, who stepped out of the race, his deputy over the last two years Robert Asembo and Twaha Mbarak who were roundly rejected as they sought the number two position.
  • Also rejected by the delegates was former Kenya international Dan Shikanda who was contesting for the deputy presidency, Angeline Mwikali who was seeking re-election as NEC member for Eastern, and second time unlucky presidential aspirant Ambrose Rachier.
  • The biggest winner of the day was newly elected FKF president Nick Mwendwa who triumphed over his nearest challenger Rachier with ease.
  • He was handed the mandate by 50 out of the 77 delegates who voted to run Kenyan football for the next four years.

The Safaricom Indoor Arena in Nairobi, once famously referred to by former Education Minister the late Joseph Kamotho as kichinjio (the slaughterhouse), lived up to that billing on Wednesday, for claiming the football careers of four veteran administrators.

By the time the eagerly awaited national football elections results had been read out by Institute for Education in Democracy executive director Brian Weke, who was the returning officer on Wednesday evening, several casualties littered the floor.

“The job is clearly cut out for Nick, as Kenyan football lovers are looking forward to radical changes,” Eluid Owalo, an ardent football fan said after the results were announced.
