Mwendwa, Nyamweya, Rachier presidential front runners

Three candidates have emerged as front runners to clinch the presidency in the Football Kenya Federation national elections, considering the provisional results of the branch elections that were held on Tuesday.

According to an independent survey by the Daily Nation Sport, candidates allied to Nick Mwendwa, Sam Nyamweya and Ambrose Rachier triumphed in a majority of the 20 branches. where the polls were conducted.

The other candidates contesting the presidency are Gor Ssemelang’o, Sammy Sholei and Ssemi Aina.

FKF’s Electoral Board was yet to release the official results for the branch elections by Wednesday evening.

The exercise was generally carried out in a free and fair manner in contrast to the chaotic sub-branch elections.

“We are proud of how the branch elections were carried out because, as you witnessed, nobody is complaining. The board is now on course to organize the national elections within the stipulated timeline,” FKF Electoral Board’s spokesman Steve Mburu said on Wednesday.

Each of the newly elected chairmen and secretary generals in the 20 branches are eligible to vote during the February 10 national polls. The youthful Mwendwa emerged the biggest winner after his allies from the Team Change camp upstaged the incumbent officials in Nairobi and other parts of the country. 

They include Mike Ouma and Bashir Hussein, who were elected as chairman of Nairobi East and West respectively.  In other results Lilian Kazungu was also elected South Coast branch secretary while Fuad Ali won the North Coast branch chairmanship.

“29 of the 38 newly elected officials are from team change. Another four (officials) with no affiliation have agreed to work with us,” Mwendwa claimed.

Rachier’s and Nyamweya’s lieutenants were also triumphant at the Coast and in Nyanza. Another candidate Ssemelang’o however called upon the candidates boasting of “early wins” to be patient.

He said: “Now that we know who will vote in the national elections, the real game has just began.” While exuding confidence, Nyamweya also confirmed that the polls were organized in a much better way, in comparison to the sub-branch elections.

The 40 voters drawn from 20 branches country wide, will be joined by 16 representatives from each of the Kenyan Premier League clubs, another 18 from the FKF Premier League and Nationwide League, alongside a representative each from the players, referees, coaches and women football’s associations to make up 78 delegates, whom will be allowed to vote in the national polls.
