Former Football Kenya Federation president Sam Nyamweya on Monday faulted the Confederation of African Football (Caf) for postponing an inspection visit to the country meant to assess the country's preparedness ahead of next year's Africa Nations Championship (Chan) tournament.

While addressing the media at his Upper Hill offices in Nairobi, Nyamweya who was key in convincing Caf's top bosses to award the hosting rights of this tournament to Kenya three years ago, also urged President Uhuru Kenyatta to ensure the tournament is hosted in the country as a way of uniting the Kenyan people at this time of heightened political activities.

"Caf should have come here to assess what's happening. We have contractors on site in all the five stadiums, they have been awarded contracts and works are ongoing," explained Nyamweya.

"Just like the World Youth Athletics Championships, President Kenyatta should use this tournament to invite the whole of Africa and unite Kenyans."

Nyamweya's address comes barely a day after Caf announced via FKF, it had suspended its inspection visit to the country, a decision the continental body attributed to the "political situation in the country.

However, Nation Sport has confirmed Caf Vice president Constant Omari is currently on a low key visit in the country since Sunday.

The purpose of his visit remains unclear, amid suggestions the continental body is about to take away the Chan hosting rights from Kenya at its forthcoming Congress on September 23 and hand them either to Morocco or South Africa.

At this moment, none of the five venues earmarked to host this competition namely, Nyayo, Kasarani, Kinoru, Machakos and Kipchoge Keino stadiums are ready for the task some 125 days to the start of the three week competition, even through major renovations are ongoing.

The Africa Nations Championship is a 16-nation football tournament that exclusively attracts home based footballers. The event is played over three weeks each two years.
