Olympic Mixed, Kaloleni win easy

What you need to know:

  • In the other match between St John’s and Wiyeta, Mwanahalima Adams gave St John’s the lead in the 26th minute with a rasping shot that beat Wiyeta goalkeeper Jacklyne Jepkemoi at the near post.
  • In boys’ football, Lasier Hill also got off to a flying start with a 4-0 win over Simotwo from Mau Region with two goals from skipper Flavos Chamlas and another from Masika Musa.
  • The other Pool B match saw Pasenga, from Aberdare Region, edge out Coast Region’s Waa Boys 2-1. In volleyball, boys’ and girls’ champions Malava Boys and Kwanthanze Girls began their campaigns with routine wins.

Former girls’ national football champions Olympic Mixed and last year’s losing finalists St John’s Kaloleni claimed impressive victories as the Airtel Rising Stars  Secondary Schools Term Two ‘B’ got under way in Machakos yesterday.

Olympic, from Metropolitan Region, crushed Highlands’ Kigara Girls 8-0 in their opening Pool A match while St John’s, who are also in the same pool, eased to a 3-1 win over Nzoia Region’s Wiyeta High in the other match.

Queenter Atieno starred for Olympic, grabbing a hat-rick while Sharon Adhiambo and Faith Kwamboka scored twice each for the 2013 national champions.

EXTENDED THE LEAD

Faith Atieno added  another goal  late on to give the Metropolitan Region champions a good start at this year’s games.

In the other match between St John’s and Wiyeta, Mwanahalima Adams gave St John’s the lead in the 26th minute with a rasping shot that beat Wiyeta goalkeeper Jacklyne Jepkemoi at the near post.

Wiyeta hit back through Judith Msimbi’s header in the 37th minute to ensure the teams go into the break level.

St John’s, who lost  to Butere Girls in last year’s final, extended their lead after the break through a brace from Diana Akinyi to take the three points.

“We played well and scored some beautiful goals. This gives us morale going into our next match. We believe this is our year. We can win the title,” said St John’s Mwanahalima.

ROUTINE WINS

In boys’ football, Lasier Hill also got off to a flying start with a 4-0 win over Simotwo from Mau Region with two goals from skipper Flavos Chamlas and another from Masika Musa.

Kwanthanze eased to a straight sets 3-0 win (25-20, 25-10,25-13)  over St John’s Kaloleni from Coast Region in their opening Pool A match while Nzoia Region’s Malava also romped to a 3-0 (25-18,33-31,25-18) win over Coast Region’s Mivumoni High in their Pool A match. National and East African Champions Kwanthanze were pushed all the way in the first set by their Coastal opponents and had to dig deep and take the first set with skipper Teresa Akai and setter Beldine Akinyi impressing.

“It was a good start and we are glad we got the first win. We are taking it a game at a time but we believe we can defend our crown even though we know there are a lot of strong teams here,” Kwanthanze coach Justin Kigwari told Daily Nation Sport.

In another Pool A match, 20-time champions Lugulu Girls got their campaign off with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-16,25-20) win over Lake Region’s Sega Girls to move joint top of the pool with three points. In other results, Aberdares Region champions Tetu High cruised to a 3-0 (25-16,25-19,25-22) in a boys Pool A match to chalk three points.
