Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro Stars on Tuesday sailed to the quarter-finals of the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup after their 2-1 win over Rwanda’s Amavubi Stars in Hawassa, Ethiopia.
The Abdallah Kibadeni-coached Stars took the lead in the 13th minute through Said Hamisi’s well taken free-kick before Simon Msuva capitalised on a goalkeeping error to double their lead with a quarter an hour to the final whistle.
Rwandan danger-man Jacques Tuyisenge pulled one back in the 86th minute, but it was too late.
Tanzania had hammered Ocean Stars of Somalia 4-0 in their first match and Tuesday's win hauled them to top position in group A with six points ahead of their final group game against hosts Ethiopia on Saturday.
Earlier on at the same venue, Uganda Cranes reignited their quest for the Cup with a domineering 4-0 win over a nine-man Zanzibar Heroes.
In a match played under scorching heat at the Hawassa International Stadium, the Cranes settled early and never got their feet off the gas pedal.
Skipper Farouk Miya led from the front bagging a brace; sweeping home the opener in the 10th minute after being put through by Erisa Ssekisambu and firing in the second from the spot in the 17th minute after Zanzibar goalie, Ali Mwadini had brought Erisa down in the box.
For the foul, centre referee Aden Djamal sent Mwadini for an early shower and things got murkier for the islanders when Abbas Mudathir was also sent to the lockers for a reckless challenge on Erisa with 17minutes left.
Erisa put his name on the score sheet in the 48th minute and with the tide going their way buoyed by their superior numbers on the pitch, Ceasar Okhuti slotted in the fourth goal in the 78th minute after linking neatly with substitute Frank Kalanda.
The Zanzibar Heroes fell 1-0 to Burundi in their opening match and with two defeats on the trot, their hopes of advancing can only be through the best loser option.
"Mistakes happened and our players were fatigued. With two red cards we had to change tact.
"Abbas (Mudathir) didn't deserve to get a red card. It shocked me," Zanzibar coach, Hamed Suleiman lamented after the match.
