Sigona Golf Club’s par 72 course will on Wednesday host the fourth leg of the year’s Mumias Sugar Company-sponsored golf series.

The event, which has attracted more than 200 golfers, is being held in the middle of the week because Sigona could not find a weekend date for the event which is open to golfers in all the three divisions.

The inaugural series is divided into six categories and will be held at the CONGU (Confederation of Golf Unions) handicapping system,.

There are categories for golfers playing off handicap five and below (5-0), 6-10, 11-15, 16-20, 21-25 and 26-36.

The winners in each category will qualify for the grand finale at Muthaiga Golf Club on November 12.

The series, being held under the umbrella of the Kenya Golf Union (KGU), was launched at Kenya Railway Golf Club on March 19.

This was to be followed by the second leg at Karen on March 31 but the event was postponed to this weekend because of the Barclays Kenya Open.

Other events were however held at Thika and Limuru last month.

Mumias Sugar Company’s director of corporate affairs and marketing, Pamela Lutta, said the company had been sponsoring events since 2000 in 14 different clubs.’

‘Share the sweetness’

“We have decided to share the “Natural Sweetness” with more people by involving over 30 clubs in the new Mumias Sugar Golf Series,” she said on Tuesday.

Besides the club events, the sugarmillers were also involved in the Tannahill Shield and the Barclays Kenya Open.

The company also sponsors Kenya’s well known professional, Dismas Indiza, to the tune of Sh2 million every year to enable him participate in international events.

At Sigona on Wednesday, most of the players are drawn in the afternoon, save for a few four balls. The event tees off at 8.58am.
