Super Eight football tournament to proceed as planned

What you need to know:

  • This competition is open to all male footballers from Nairobi County who are not contractually attached to any professional club.
  • The top three teams will pocket Sh500,000, Sh250,000 and Sh100,000 respectively.
  • The zonal winners will in the meantime pocket Sh60,000.

The SportPesa Super Eight football tournament will proceed next week as planned in various venues in Nairobi County.

This follows a change of heart by the Football Kenya Federation on Thursday to allow the tournament to proceed.

Two weeks ago, FKF Nairobi Branch had obtained a court injunction stopping the annual competition from taking place due to “congestion of fixtures and a tight calender of events” among other reasons.

“Hundreds of youth at the grassroots are the real winners today,” Extreme Sports CEO Hussein Mohammed said after Thursday’s development. FKF and organisers Extreme Sports are now expected to harmonise the tournament’s schedule in the next few days, paving way for the start of the competition which will together more than 100 teams on April 4.

This competition is open to all male footballers from Nairobi County who are not contractually attached to any professional club.

GREAT HISTORY

The tournament has a history of unearthing football talents. Players who were discovered through the tournament include Jerry Santos (Gor Mahia), Jacob Keli (AFC Leopards), Phillip “Bobo” Odhiambo (KRA) and Joseph Shikokoti (Leopards) who are all playing in the top-flight Kenyan league, a trend Mohammed hopes to continue.

Dagoretti leads Nairobi’s eight zones in number of registered teams that will feature in the tournament at 19, followed by Kamukunji (16), Westlands (14), Makadara (12), Starehe (10), Embakassi (13), Langata (7) and Kasarani (10).

The top three teams will pocket Sh500,000, Sh250,000 and Sh100,000 respectively.

The zonal winners will in the meantime pocket Sh60,000.
