Supporting Gor not licence to be unruly

What you need to know:

  • As my senior colleague Roy Gachuri vividly told us in his column in this newspaper on Saturday, if we wrap this one without a loss, it would be the second time Gor would be achieving this feat that is a preserve of very few clubs in the world.
  • It is an open secret that apart from drinking binges and just being a general nuisance to other road users, some Gor fans turn the vans and buses into marijuana kingdoms where dope springs eternal.

We did it again! Congratulations to all members of the K’Ogalo nation for the sustained war of attrition that saw our beloved Gor Mahia win the Premiership diadem for three consecutive times, meaning we get to keep the trophy for good.

And take note, we are still unbeaten with four games to go.

Having said that, today I am in the mood for ranting and my guns are trained on the Gor Mahia supporters otherwise known as the Green Army.

Coming from the match against Ulinzi in Nakuru, some Gor supporters got involved in a grisly road accident that saw two of them lose their lives.

The incident sparked a hot debate on the social media, an exchange which I followed keenly. Like the great teacher from Nazareth said, when issue of morality cropped up, all I can say is that let him or her with no sin cast the first stone.

It is true that there are aspects of behaviour which some Gor Mahia fans need to get rid of pronto. Travel in a convoy with the members of the Green Army and you will see first hand some people who believe that the rule of law does not apply to them.

It is an open secret that apart from drinking binges and just being a general nuisance to other road users, some Gor fans turn the vans and buses into marijuana kingdoms where dope springs eternal.

Drunk driving is the order of the day for some of these people therefore putting at risk many other lives, some of whom have no idea what Gor Mahia is all about in the first place.

Hanging and swaying monkey style, these people don’t give a hoot what would happen to them while yelling obscenities at onlookers more so policemen they come across.

I believe it is time the police put their feet down and have these criminals face the full force of the law. A roadblock mounted with regular, administration policemen and even a detachment of the Recce unit can have the job done in a jiffy. Sanity must prevail and people must be told that supporting Gor is not a license to engage in criminal acts.

Then there are those supporters with a huge sense of entitlement who invade the pitch on victory days snatching the limelight from the players. These too must be stopped.
