Tusker, KPL in Sh170m league deal

Kenya Premier League and East African Breweries are on the verge of signing a Sh170 million sponsorship for the top-flight national football league.

KPL and the brewers are just awaiting clearance from the government, which gazetted the sponsorship notice two weeks ago.

According to KPL, the sponsorship, which will take effect immediately it is announced, will be a big boost to the league which already has a media sponsor in Pay TV service provider SuperSport.

The sponsorship is expected to be unveiled early next month.

“As it stands we can say we are almost sealing the deal,” said KPL chief executive Jack Oguda. “We have been in talks with EABL for quite some time.

“I can now confirm that the deal is all but sealed we are just awaiting clearance from the government.”

Tusker Premier League

Once that is finalised, the league will be known as Tusker Premier League, the sponsors taking the role of title sponsors.

EABL are also the sponsors of the national football team Harambee Stars.

“It is a big breakthrough and a boost to the league. Clubs will benefit much more,” said Oguda.

KPL has for over a decade survived without a title sponsor since EABL pulled out in 2001 citing mismanagement of the money.

The league nearly collapsed, with clubs surviving on shoestring budgets, until the coming of SuperSport.

Oguda said under the new arrangement Premiership clubs will be required to improve on their operations
