Former champions Tusker gave an appropriate response to their critics with a flawless 2-0 victory over Sony Sugar in a Kenyan Premier league match at the Safaricom Kasarani Stadium on Saturday.

In an earlier contest at the same venue, Chrispinus Onyango scored a goal and created another as KCB floored a nine-man Muhoroni Youth 3-0 in a tension-packed contest.

At the Nairobi City Stadium, basement sides Nairobi City Stars and Nakuru All Stars shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw while in Nakuru, Chemelil Sugar and Western Stima fought out a dour barren draw. The 2-0 win was Tusker’s first in four matches and it will come as a huge boost to Francis Kimanzi’s side ahead of what is expected to be an explosive showdown with champions and run-away leaders Gor Mahia next Monday.

Lloyd Wahome nodded home a Kevin Kimani corner kick at the half-hour mark to set the tone of the game before Jesse Were robbed Jairus Adira of the ball in the six-yard box to poke home, his eighth goal of the term at the stroke of half time. Were’s goal was enough to confirm the win while leaving Sony coach Zedekiah ’Zico’ Otieno feeling the heat.

The sugar millers were unable to stage a comeback despite creating some neat chances in either half. Their forward-surging game only served to expose their defence and last term’s Best Goalkeeper Jairus Adira, who was playing with an injury, was punished at the stroke of half time for failing to handle a dangerous ball from Were.

“I’m happy with the three points and I hope the boys will do even better in the next game because I want us to finish the first leg strongly. Morale in the team is now high and all focus now shifts to our next match against Gor Mahia,” Kimanzi said after the match.

Earlier, Chrispinus Onyango scored and set up Yusuf Juma for the second, before Paul Mungai Kiongera made the scoreline 3-0 with a stunning volley for KCB who have been on a rough patch.

Muhoroni played large chunks of the second half with two men less after Peter Okore and Wellington Ochieng were sent off in a span of two minutes. Okore was shown a card in the 55th before his team mate followed 120 seconds later.

At City Stadium, AllStars sprung to a 36th minute lead when Geoffrey Maina weaved his way into the six yard box firing past Ronny Kagunzi in City Stars goal. City clawed back just three minutes after the interval when Oscar Mbugua kept his cool to drill in from the spot.

“We have earned a point which I’m grateful with, but I think we should have won the match. They were awarded a soft penalty, but that is football,” All Stars coach Peter Okidi said.

“For me the transfer window has ended because I already know the players I have and who intend to bring,” he added.

Both sides continued to create chance after the other, but neither lacked the cutting edge in the final third.
