Tusker move seven points clear on log

What you need to know:

  • On Sunday, the brewers, under the tutelage of Ugandan coach Paul Nkata, defied pressure from Kakamega Homeboyz to grind a pivotal 1-0 win.
  • In the last one month, the brewers have dropped points  against Western Stima(1-1), Thika United (0-2), Sofapaka (1-1) and Chemelil Sugar (2-2).

Tusker’s quest for an 11th Kenyan Premier League crown is a tale of twists and turns. Their run mirrors a well-rehearsed script, which the actors have failed to enact with perfection.

On Sunday, the brewers, under the tutelage of Ugandan coach Paul Nkata, defied pressure from Kakamega Homeboyz to grind a pivotal 1-0 win.

They extended their lead at the summit of the log to seven points. The chasing pack, with Gor Mahia in second position on 37 points, had a quiet weekend. K’Ogalo, though, have a game in hand.

Title winning squads boast of players who are physically imposing energetic and with mental strength. Tusker, despite being the league leaders, lack either of these qualities.

In a season where none of the 16 teams have shown a real desire of being crowned champions, the brewers are emerging as the bookmakers’ favourites.
If they hold their nerves to claim the title, it will make a remarkable tale, having blown hot and cold.

DROPPED POINTS

In the last one month, the brewers have dropped points  against Western Stima(1-1), Thika United (0-2), Sofapaka (1-1) and Chemelil Sugar (2-2). Had they picked all the points, they would have been 15 points clear atop the standings.

But as they fumble, their charge is being aided by equally flip-flopping Gor Mahia and Mathare United.

However, as the race for the title enters the business end, skipper James Situma said they should not be judged harshly.
“The second leg is always tough. No one wants to drop points. The league is competitive and unpredictable,” Situma said.

“We have been concentrating on ourselves and its working for us. You never expect to win all matches, but you draw, lose and win some. There are still 21 points to fight for and it needs a lot of focus. We need to stay together,” he added.

His teammate, winger Danson Kago, who broke his goal drought at the weekend for the slender 1-0 win over Homeboyz added:  “We are so conscious not to make mistakes. Under such circumstances we are bound to blunder.”
