What you need to know:

  • Gor Mahia on Sunday beat SportPesa Premier League champions Tusker 1-0 to win this year's Kenyan Premier League Super Cup at the Afraha Stadium, Nakuru.
  • Rwandese striker Jacques Tuyisenge converted a 60th minute penalty for the only goal of the game and K'Ogalo held out to clinch the first silverware of the new campaign.

Gor Mahia showed what material they are made of ahead of the new season when they beat SportPesa Premier League champions Tusker 1-0 to clinch the Kenyan Premier League Super Cup at Afraha Stadium, Nakuru, Sunday.

The match was a curtain-raiser for the new season kicks off on March 11.

Gor’s man of the moment was Rwandese import Jacques Tuyisenge who converted a brilliant spot kick in the 60th minute, sending Tusker custodian Duncan Ochieng in the wrong direction.

Kenneth Muguna had floated a well-weighted pass on the path of Timothy Otieno who superbly controlled the ball and dribbled into Tusker’s 18-yard box befure being hacked down by Tusker defender Samuel Olwande, prompting referee George Mwai to award K’Ogalo a penalty kick.

“I dedicate this goal to my three-year-old daughter Nishimwe Xandaria and my girlfriend Musiime Jordin as they are my number one fans,” said the 25-year-old Tuyisenge.

Against an ill-prepared Tusker, Gor, coached by Marcelo Ferreira, dominated from the word go with flowing football. But they failed to translate ball possession into goals and wasted many scoring chances, particularly in the first half with trio of Haron Shakava, Ernest Wendo and Godfrey Walusimbi who was the darling off the crowd being the main culprits.

Tusker hardly tested Gor custodian Boniface Oluoch in the second half, save for Clifford Alwanga’s 80th-minute free kick from outside the box.

On the opposite side, Muguna should have stretched Gor’s tally to two in the 85th minute but his blockbuster sailed over the crossbar.
