Former champions Ulinzi Stars battled to a barren draw with the visiting Thika United in a midweek SportPesa Premier League match at Afraha Stadium, Nakuru on Wednesday.

The lethargic soldiers failed to capitalise on a dozen scoring chances they created during the encounter.

Benjamin Nyangweso's men will rue the missed opportunities in the match after missing clear cut chances.

Daniel Waweru should have opened the scoring for the soldiers after 12 minutes but fired wayward off target from inside the area.

Five minutes later, the misfiring soldiers had another golden opportunity to notch the match opener but defender Brian Birgen's shot missed the target.

With the soldiers on top, towering striker Oscar Wamalwa, who scored their winner against Mathare United at the weekend, failed to find the back of the net in the 24th minute.

On the opposite side, Thika United had also a share of missed chances. Dennis Lewa penetrated deep into the Ulinzi area at the half hour mark but as he was preparing to shoot, he was tackled by defender Hassan 'Rio' Mohammed for a fruitless corner.

On resumption Harambee Stars forward Sammy Onyango saw his firm header sail over the cross bar as the soldiers continued with their tale of missed chances.

WARURU ON

Nyangweso introduced Stephen Waruru and Michael Otieno for Cliff Kasuti and Wamalwa but this did little to change their tale of missed opportunities.

Thika head coach Nicholas Muyoti brought in Michael Mutinda, Dennis Odhiambo and Edmon Aden for Saad Musa, Benjamin Ireri and Shami Kibwana.

"Ulinzi is a strong side and we put everything into attack but unfortunately we could not translate the scoring chances into goals," said Muyoti.

Nyangweso, who cut a dejected figure on the touchline after the full time whistle, said they were unlucky.

"We created a dozen scoring chances but we did not score goals and I cannot explain because when we play away matches we score goals," said Nyangweso.
