Southampton’s Victor Wanyama has been cleared by the club’s medical staff to resume training with the first team and is in line for a role in the top-billed league fixture against Arsenal next weekend.

The Harambee Stars captain has missed action for the past five weeks since chipping a bone in his lower left leg following a collision with Aston Villa keeper Brad Guzan on December 4.

“The pain is gone and I am now feeling comfortable. I just want to regain my fitness and get back to playing football. I am delighted for my team-mates who have performed well in my absence,” the player told Nation Sport.

Saturday’s league clash against Sunderland is expected to come too soon for the 22-year-old. The club posted pictures of Wanyama training with his teammates on their official website.

The former Celtic midfielder is also unlikely to feature against Yeovil in the FA Cup in line with manager Mauricio Pochettino’s policy of resting first team players during Cup games.

Southampton are currently placed ninth on the EPL table standings, having amassed 30 points from 21 games, seven points shy of a Europe league spot.

The club has not been afraid to announce their ambitions of playing in Europe next season but have found jostling for the top positions in the world’s most popular football league a tough undertaking.

Wanyama joined Southampton from Scottish giants Celtic this season.
