We’ll beat Kenya in World Cup qualifier, Eagles boast

The Nigeria Football Federation has insisted Stephen Keshi will stay on as “Super Eagles” coach after the Africa Cup of Nations.

The NFF chairman, Alhaji Aminu Maigari, says they have all the confidence in Keshi and any reports of his being fired are a misrepresentation of affairs.

‘’Who said we want to sack Keshi? He is our coach and we have all the confidence in him’’ he said.

That was in stark contrast to utterances from his assistant, Mike Omerua, who had told Keshi Nigerians want nothing but the title.

‘’We have told Keshi we are going for nothing else but the title,’’ said Omerua. Keshi maintains that reaching the finals is, in itself, an achievement even as Nigerian express their profound confidence in their team’s capacity to beat Burkina Faso in the finals Sunday.

Jones Agintuku, an official of Nigerian club Warri Wolves said Keshi will only be judged by his performance at the Africa Cup of Nations but feels the federation should give the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations winning captain a chance.

Cannot think of Kenya

Alex Oka, a sports administrator from Abuja, posed, “Are you telling me the World Cup qualifiers are on? Why should we think about the future when the present means so much to our country?’’ he asked.

“We cannot think of Kenya now when we want to be African champions.”

Asked about what he thinks of next month’s World Cup qualifying match between Nigeria and Kenya, he asked rhetorically: “Kenya? We will definitely beat them. When are we meeting them again?’’

Kenya meets Nigeria on March 22 in Abuja in the qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup and Nigerian fans believe they will beat Burkina Faso today for their third title in the Nations Cup.

“We started off on a low key but the coach has tightened his squad. We hope for a good result in the final but let us not start praising the coach yet,” said Agintuku.

He says Nigeria will probably go for a foreign coach for the world cup qualifiers during which they meet Kenya in the next round.

Interestingly, the Nigerian community is not aware they are playing Kenya in the road to Brazil.”

‘’We will not be dancing about our next match. Let us win here then we can think of the World Cup,’’ said Oxa.

Nigeria meets Burkina Faso Sunday evening in the finals at the Soccer city Stadium in Soweto, Johannesburg and Nigeria have the full confidence of winning.
